May was awful. I expected it to be, but sometimes even when you’re prepared, you’re not actually prepared. See, May is one of the worst months of the year at my day job (the other being November), and it’s not uncommon for stress levels to rise. In the past, I’ve managed fairly well by keeping to a regular gym schedule and SIFF films, but this May didn’t exactly cooperate. Part of it was some logistical changes in the workplace, and part of it was…well, my own fault.
As I write this, I have just finished content edits for Hidden Scars. It’s now ready for the copy editor. I’ve had those edit notes for almost a year, and instead of diving in earlier, I kept putting it off and putting it off. This is epically poor planning on my part; I could have finished these back in December. But nooo, I didn’t. I waited, which meant I ended up doing what turned out to be fairly extensive revisions during one of the busiest months for my day job. I’ve learned my lesson. Revisions and May do not mix.
Not all of May was terrible, though. I’ve been picking steadily away at the rewrite of Impulse Control. It’s going well, and I’m happy with the depth Jane and Logan’s relationship is taking on. And I found reason number 376 why my CP, Liv Rancourt, is awesome – over drinks the other night she helped me iron out the kinks that were keeping me from finishing the draft of Broken Down. After taking most (if not all) of this week off, I’ll be diving back in and knocking out the final seven chapters.
I’ve got a (mostly) updated release schedule, too. Hidden Scars will release around the end of September (official release date will be announced when I have the cover, so expect that sometime in July). For those of you who don’t like reading on the internet or find Wattpad too annoying/confusing to deal with, Run will most likely release as a complete book sometime later this fall. I don’t have a firm date yet, but once I do, I’ll post an update. The Perfect Man, my Lit Valentine’s novella, will release around the middle to end of January, and Broken Down will release sometime next April. I have a couple of things in the works for releases into 2017, but I can’t talk about them yet.
Spring’s cooled off some around here after our abnormally warm winter. I finally managed to get to the nursery this past weekend to pick up some annuals for the flower beds. One of my dahlias is already showing green! I’ve been picking out some hikes, too. The BF said he’d be up for a monthly hike, starting in June, but when I brought up the location for our first one, he was less than enthusiastic. So I may need to find a different hiking buddy. Or maybe I’ll just go by myself. Hiking alone isn’t my favorite, but I’m not about to let recalcitrant boyfriends keep me from going. 🙂
With the revisions done, my goal for the summer is to reclaim my write/life balance. Before May, I’d done all right: pushing through if a chapter was flowing really well, giving myself a weeknight (or two) off. Last month threw everything off. I’m hoping June will be the month that nudges it all back on track.
Hope y’all had a better May than me! What are your summer plans?
